Helsinki Dance Company: "Riemukupla"

Helsinki Dance Company is Helsinki City Theatre’s resident dance group, which comes up with two dance premieres per year created by group leader Ville Sormunen and the dancers. In addition, the company takes part in the theatre’s musical productions, which have at least doubled in number during manager Asko Sarkola’s tenure. As long as the shows are well produced, Helsinki audiences adore musicals.

Over the past few years, the theatre has got together a professional group of freelance dancers and singers for the musicals, and even though the productions do not quite rival Broadway, the results are nothing to be ashamed of.

The theatre’s repertoire has attracted a record-breaking amount of visitors, which comes as no surprise since there are many successful shows in it, including Ron Harwoods’ comedy “The Quartet.” Four of Finland’s best-loved actors, all over 70 (two of them already 80), have performed it for more than five years to sold out auditoriums. This spring Helsinki Dance Company presented six new pieces. In addition to the four official commissions, there was a short 6-minute piece by one dancer and a Bollywood parody by stage director Kari Heiskanen.
