Margaretha Åsberg
Along with Jan Zetterberg and Mats Ek, Margaretha Åsberg belongs to what could be called the golden generation of Swedish contemporary dance. During her almost forty-year career, Åsberg has combined the role of innovative choreographer with that of organiser and scholar. She founded the dance group Pyramiderna, was the initiator and driving force behind Stockholm’s Moderna Dansteatern and the first professor of choreography in Sweden.
As a choreographer and teacher, Åsberg has triggered new ways of thinking about and creating dance.
It is interesting to note how many of the dancers that have worked with her over the years have gone on to become choreographers – and how different they all are.
Choreographers and dancers were given the freedom to try out new forms of choreography at Moderna Dansteatern, where they could also meet fellow artists and a new audience with an interest in contemporary dance and performance. But it is also thanks to the collective effort of these artists that Moderna Dansteatern survived the critical early years.
