China is a country where anything can happen and things are changing rapidly, day by day, in all fields of life. Dance is no exception. Jin Xing – golden star – is the best example of this. This graceful, elegant woman and accomplished dancer, former man and colonel in the Chinese Red Army, now runs her own dance company in Shanghai. It is the first independent group under the current Communist government and often performs abroad.
She has also written her autobiography, which has been translated into French (“Rien n’arrive par hasad”), Italian (“Volevo diventare una ballerina”) and German (“Shanghai Tango“) – in which she gives a sincere account of her life, from her struggles with her family and the military authority to be accepted into the army, her involvement in the folk dance team, his/her painful decision to change sex in China, made with a strong will and great courage despite her fears, up to the fellowship she was awarded to study modern dance in the US.
