"Making Video Dance"

Katarina McPherson’s new book ”Making Video Dance” goes into depth regarding use of digital video cameras and editing and is clearly aimed at dancers and choreographers. As a practical manual it is comprehensive and accessible, well organised and stuffed with tips from how to frame the dancing body, to making a story board, filming improvised movement, editing, even packaging and promoting a final product.

Emerging in the 1980‘s from Laban Centre London, McPherson was a choreographer before undertaking a post-graduate training in Electronic Imaging at Duncan Jordonstone College in Dundee, Scotland, where she is now a Research Fellow. Working as a TV director and teacher, she has been involved in a number of innovative screen dance projects in recent years. “The Move Me Booth” made in collaboration with Ricochet Dance Productions, allows members of the public to perform a dance according to the instructions of renowned choreographers ranging from Shobana Jeyasingh to Deborah Hay and Stephen Petronio (www.move-me.com). “Hyperchoreography” (hyperchoreography.org) is a website that allows viewers to make editing/ordering choices about given video dance material, and to discuss the ...
