In Sweden, Denmark and Finland, ballet companies are big and repertories are interesting. For those who have the versatile skills to take on the position of a director, here are the opportunities:
The Gothenburg Ballet in Sweden is looking for a new director to start in July 2007. Kevin Irving is closing the door on its contemporary-styled repertory. It was previous director Anders Hellström, an ex-Forsythe dancer, who brought the Forsythe repertory, in particular, to Gothenburg.
Another theater soon needing a replacement is the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen.
Frank Andersen is leaving the company in 2008 although the board offered to extend his contract to 2011. He had two periods in office as the boss of the biggest Nordic company. His comment: “I was called back to Denmark (from the Royal Swedish) in 2002 to bring the company together and secure the future position of Bournonville and the Danish Ballet ... Mission accomplished!”
