Carlos Acosta is one of the greatest dancers in the world. He won the Prix de Lausanne as a complete unknown and has subsequently danced with all the major companies of the world. He is based in London and is a member of the Royal Ballet.

His autobiography is an extraordinary document. It is rare to read a personal story that is so revelatory, particularly from a star at the pinnacle of his fame.

Acosta’s honesty about the emotional, sometimes physical, fights with his father Pedro – the central relationship of his life – are private moments which cast the reader in the role of unwilling voyeur, such is their intensity.

Likewise the openly expressed lust (and love) he feels for his sexual partners, and the pain these relationships cause him when they fail, are totally candid. His many triumphs on the ballet stage are thus presented along with an unflinching backstage story of emotional pain, injury and homesickness.

This is the best dance autobiography I have ever read: the most truthful and the most moving.

From the start – a plastic, intense...

Mathilde Monnier, Heiner Goebbels: «Surrogate Cities»

you are a dance historian and critic here in Zagreb. Could you describe what is happening with the dance centre that the Zagreb authorities promised to the dance community here? I was told that the city of Zagreb had bought an abandoned movie theatre in order to adapt it into a new dance centre. But construction work has been going on for more than...
