Carlos Acosta is one of the greatest dancers in the world. He won the Prix de Lausanne as a complete unknown and has subsequently danced with all the major companies of the world. He is based in London and is a member of the Royal Ballet.

His autobiography is an extraordinary document. It is rare to read a personal story that is so revelatory, particularly from a star at the pinnacle of his fame.

Acosta’s honesty about the emotional, sometimes physical, fights with his father Pedro – the central relationship of his life – are private moments which cast the reader in the role of unwilling voyeur, such is their intensity.

Likewise the openly expressed lust (and love) he feels for his sexual partners, and the pain these relationships cause him when they fail, are totally candid. His many triumphs on the ballet stage are thus presented along with an unflinching backstage story of emotional pain, injury and homesickness.

This is the best dance autobiography I have ever read: the most truthful and the most moving.

He went through hell as his closest friends died and he struggled with a serious drug problem. It has taken him a long time to overcome the debilitating...

Chance and Circumstance

Chance and circumstance is the title of dancer Carolyn Brown’s new book. Rather than being just s memoir, it is a gripping correction of a myth. Having been one of Cunningham’s dancers for years, Douglas Dunn finds his own memories confirmed.

The silent world of human movement. What is there to say about it? Anything? Merce Cunningham, spare of speech but eloquent,...

Was macht Anne Tismer
