New dance opportunities in Sweden

The eight of October Skånes Dansteater has inaugurated their new house, Båghallarna, situated in Västra Hamnen, the former industrial area that has become the dynamic hot spot of Malmö – with the sky scraper Turning Torso as its landmark (photo right). The only thing left unchanged in the shipyard warehouse is the bow formed shell that's given the building its name (the bow halls). Inside it is a completely new building with a theatre containing 250 seats, offices, a kitchen, a laundry, a dressmaker’s workshop, rehearsal studios, dressing rooms, gym etc.

Compared to the company’s old premises located at the back of the municipal theatre in what was once the theatre caretaker‘s home it is a big change indeed. The move will mean that the company now will have the necessary space it has lacked for so many years. The response from the company and its director Marie Brolin-Tani is to plan to expand their activities with lunch performances, open rehearsals, workshops, lectures etc. They also hope that Båghallarna will become a natural meeting place for the audience as well as for the professional cultural workers.
