Symposium

"On Crip Technique, Knowledge and Expertise"

The Berlin gathering "On Crip Technique, Knowledge and Expertise" is not intended to be a symposium like any other. Instead, a series of panels, artistic encounters, active rest, reflection, and exchange are planned. The goal is to move closer to an accessible, anti-ableist, and crip-positive future in choreography and dance teaching.

Crip refers to a political and cultural identity that is embraced by some disabled people as an act of self-empowerment. Like Claire Cunningham, who initiated the gathering as part of her Einstein Profile Professorship in "Choreography, Dance and Disability Arts" at the Inter-University Center for Dance (HZT) in Berlin. In her piece Songs of the Wayfarer, Cunningham embarks on a journey as a four-legged creature with her crutches and explores the circumstances under which she treads this path. Now, Cunningham and her team are inviting artists and experts such as Julia Watts Belser, Eli Clare, Kenny Fries, Sandie Yi, Chiara Bersani, Aby Watson, Raquel Meseguer Zafem, Jamie McCarthy, Angela Alves, Jeanne Eschert, Márcio Kerber Canabarro, and Sindri Runudde to Berlin to advance processes of change based on diverse experiences, practices, and the phenomenology of disability.

Such processes were already initiated in 2021 at the symposium "The Choreography of Care" at the tanzhaus nrw in Düsseldorf. Two further symposia are now scheduled for this fall and in 2028. In 2021, the focus was on care in various facets such as choreography, design, and communication. Building on this, the focus in Berlin will be on the aesthetic, political, and philosophical potential of Crip techniques, knowledge, and expertise.
