Archaeology deals with what is left after the disappearance: traces, remains, references. Accordingly, it is a perfect fit when Ruth Geiersberger, winner of the 2023 Munich Theater Prize, shows her "installation with performative executions" Das Verschwinden in Munich’s State Museum of Egyptian Art, one of the most important collections of its kind in the country. The work describes a research trip in the footsteps of the botanist Ludwig Leichhardt, who disappeared in Australia in the 19th century: the artist arranges artifacts from her trip through the museum space, is sometimes present, rearranges things, seeks conversation with the audience. At the same time, musical-performative interventions — for instance with the dancer Josephine Ann Endicott and the draftsman and performer Christoph Lammers — outline what is no longer there: what has disappeared.
