Alba Castillo’s production of Romeo und Julia at Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern delivers dance theater at its finest—albeit with certain dramaturgical liberties: Julia (Maayan Goren) lives in strictly conservative Valencia in 1940—shortly after the Spanish Civil War—with her widowed mother (Camilla Marcati), her best friend (Shelley Stolpner), and her militant cousin Tybalt (Rune Leysen). At the Capulets’ bar, she meets the unconventional Romeo (Elias Aaron Jonathan Habegger), a freedom-loving Republican who stirs up the neighborhood alongside his friends Mercutio (Teade Abma) and Benvolio (Win McCain).
