"I’d like to dance a dance for you," goes a line roughly halfway through the piece, "and this is the dance where I put on a skirt because I want to know who all I can be." This pretty much sums up the content of Patricia Carolin Mai’s Rockoko: it is about self-invention and self-empowerment, achieved through the medium of dance. Or perhaps not quite? Mai is a talented choreographer, but above all, she is a communication specialist who manages to forge connections between people through art. In 2025, she founded Mai:Company, an ensemble of more than 110 people that is extremely diverse in terms of age, ethnic background, gender, and—not least—dance experience. Rockoko, presented at the Hamburg production venue Kampnagel, is their first collaboratively created piece.
