To mark the 200th anniversary of the Landestheater Detmold, the production of Vom Fischer und seiner Frau succeeds as a remarkably cohesive ballet performance. Katharina Torwesten’s choreography and Robert Lillinger’s live score do not merely reenact the fairy tale; instead, they create a study of insatiable desire. Mirea Mauriello portrays the woman with great precision: from the fleeting happiness of a fulfilled wish, through domineering self-aggrandizement, to the feverish restlessness of wanting more. Her movements tip from controlled elegance into staccato-like greed. Leony Rafael Boni embodies the fisherman, subservient to her desires, the perfect counterpart.
