In the Königsfelden monastery church, Carmen falls in love with a torera. She takes it as badly as all the Carmens before her. Why should Don José throw in the towel just because his lover is messing around with a woman instead of the glamorous macho? However, it does get under his (male) skin. In Filipe Portugal's zeitgeisty festival production Carmen for Tanz und Kunst Königsfelden, the role rewrite would make sense in terms of content if the character in this triangle danced with more powerful material. This isn't easy, since the pointework of Giulia Tonelli's Carmen and the flamenco of David Coria's Don José are both in a class of their own. Where pointe meets click, the sparks fly.
