Screening

Humo

Rafaela Carrasco won the Premio Nacional de Danza in the "Creation" category in 2023 and has only recently premiered her long-awaited new work: Humo – Die Schwestern der Carmen is a tribute to the more than 6,000 female cigar makers who toiled in the Royal Tobacco Factory and served as the inspiration for Prosper Mérimée’s Carmen. Carrasco not only performs in the piece herself but, through her staging, also turns her gaze upon the fates of women caught between tradition and the spirit of breaking new ground—conveyed through a symbiosis of flamenco and contemporary dance. A recording of the performance from the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville will be available to watch in the Arte media library starting 10 June.
