Every morning, when she goes to training at the Munich National Theatre, she says a little thank you—“very quietly, just for myself.” From woman to woman, so to speak. Because there, in front of the Konstanze Vernon Hall, hangs the portrait of the namesake and founding director of the Bavarian State Ballet, who back then kept pestering the politicians until the gentlemen capitulated to the former ballerina’s rhetorical and persuasive skills and gave in, granting a state-issued label for the pirouettes-and-pas-de-deux fraction of opera. Vernon not only secured the promotion of her company, but also established a prize named after her for outstanding young talent.
