Cy Twombly is a central focus of the collection at Munich's Museum Brandhorst; the entire upper floor of the museum is dedicated to him. The exhibition Fünf Freunde ("Five Friends") now contextualizes the American painter by juxtaposing his art with that of four companions: John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg, creating a panopticon of genre-spanning arts that naturally integrated music, dance, painting, sculpture, and drawing. These connections are not new; Twombly's proximity to the performing arts, for example, is evident; the fact that the artists involved were actually friends is no coincidence, and the role of Black Mountain College in North Carolina as a melting pot of the arts is also well documented. Nevertheless, it is interesting to be able to trace how the arts in the postwar U.S. mutually influenced each other in the museum space.
