Wisps of fog drift across the circular, black-mirrored floor, soon becoming swirled by a primate-like creature—a performer in a grey oversized hoodie, arms extended so that he moves on all fours. A second creature joins him, followed by the first two of the runners, until finally all four performers are mechanically walking in a circle. On this September evening, the stage of Berlin's HAU2 resembles an arena in the early morning dew— still before dawn, illuminated by a stream of minimalist, sleek lights. Seemingly endlessly, Aaron Samuel Davis, Emeka Ene, Shanice Trustfull, and Sophie Yukiko run their laps in Joana Tischkau's Runnin', accompanied by muffled beats that dictate the running rhythm (sound: Frieder Blume).
