Moments of Calm
Leroy Mokgatle
Soloist with the Berlin State Ballet
When I first thought about "accomplices," I immediately thought of people. But then I realized that some of the things that help me the most aren't always people. One of my greatest accomplices is stillness.
Throughout my childhood, my family always reminded me that rest is not laziness. It is necessary. As a dancer, it is easy to feel like you always have to do more, train more, push harder. There is always something to improve, another goal to reach, or a new challenge waiting for us. That is why I have learned that sometimes the most productive thing I can do is to pause, recover, and give myself room to breathe.
I also consider it extremely important to switch off from work and invest in my personal life. Spending time with friends, visiting family, or simply connecting with people outside the dance world helps me put things into perspective. It reminds me that there is a whole life beyond the studio and the stage. These moments allow me to return to my work with a clearer mind and a healthier attitude.
This profession is beautiful, but it can also be very demanding. It has a tendency to completely consume you if you aren’t careful. Sometimes you are so focused on the next performance, rehearsal, or achievement that you forget to look after yourself as a person. That is why I cherish these moments of calm, connection, and reflection so much. Whether it is a quiet moment after rehearsal, sharing a meal with friends, or spending time with family—these experiences help me stay grounded. They remind me that my worth is not measured solely by how much I work or achieve. It is a simple lesson, but one that continues to shape both my life and my art.
