Lightning Start

One hundred years ago, Yvonne Georgi took over as dance director in Gera at just 21 years old. A look back

When Yvonne Georgi began her service at the Reußisches Theater in Gera on 10 August 1925, she was 21 years old. She didn't yet know much about theatre operations and daily life. Nevertheless, she had a brilliant start. Later she would recall: "In any case, that was the best year in the theatre I've ever experienced. The Reußisches Theater was so vibrant in every respect. I could do whatever I wanted."

Yvonne Georgi was born in Leipzig on 29 October 1903. Her father was a doctor from Oldenburg, her mother came from North Africa—so maybe she was something like a Saxon Josephine Baker as a child. Her urge to move must have been so compelling that she received training in rhythmic gymnastics in Hellerau near Dresden and subsequently apprenticed with Mary Wigman in Dresden. Wigman ...
