Mthuthuzeli November, Phoebe Jewitt Hope

How can hope be danced? It doesn't have to be, dance is hope anyway. If you don't believe it, see Hope at the Lucerne Theatre. For the latest dance evening, dance director Wanda Puvogel, who was appointed co-artistic director of the three-genre theatre shortly before the premiere, commissioned South African Mthuthuzeli November and British Phoebe Jewitt, a dancer in Lucerne since 2019, to create a piece of hope in dark times.

The result is two gems that are themselves bearers of hope— even if, or perhaps precisely because, they speak to us from opposite directions. November's Oh Deer looks to the future, Phoebe Jewitt's White Rabbit to the past. November tells a fairy tale, Jewitt a story and, like the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, takes us on a trip into the rabbit hole.
