Good Leadership

Good governance simply requires the fundamental qualities of human interaction. And self-confidence, which in turn is based on knowledge, experience, and a feel for people. If possible, it's important to take advantage of a professional introduction to contemporary personnel management and leadership before taking on too much. A sympathetic dual leadership, like the one I experienced in Wuppertal with Roger Christmann, with whom I discussed everything before making decisions together— that's a huge help with the many tasks as artistic director. Empathy for every single ensemble member is necessary; making no distinctions, trying to be fair, taking everyone seriously, not downplaying them—I've spoken extensively with all the staff, including non-artistic, to find out where the critical points lie. In addition, I encourage each individual to bring their problems up immediately, before they become insurmountable. So, not talking behind people's backs, but openly, without fear, that's crucial. As artistic director, you are, at best, in love with every performer and want every member to reach their full potential with joy and dedication. I always found being there and motivating people to be the greatest task.

Openness and, at the same time, setting clear artistic guidelines is important. Being reliable is also important. Mistakes are bound to be made anyway, and they should be talked about. I believe this is the only way we can learn a new, trusting way of interacting. If you enjoy power games, you're in the wrong place for any leadership position.

Bettina Wagner-Bergelt was dramaturge and deputy director of the Bayerisches Staatsballett and director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.
