Serene Melancholy: Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Solal Mariotte discover the chansonnier Jacques Brel for the dance stage

Brel is based on a list of chansons by the famous Belgian singer-songwriter Jacque Brel, simply played one after the other. That is fairly unusual for Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker. As unusual is that she co-signed the work with the 40 years younger French dancer Solal Mariotte. Last but not least: this dance evening often illustrates the songs in a direct way. Brel is as much theatre as it is dance.

Raw Emotionalism
Brel is in that way a portrait of three generations: the world-famous singer, born in 1929, the celebrated choreographer, born in 1960, and the up-and-coming talent from 2001. Solal Mariotte indeed was already an accomplished breakdancer before he studied at PARTS in Brussels, and was a thrilling presence in Rosas’ Exit Above.
