Akram Khan, Manal AlDowayan Thikra: Night of Remembering

Al-Ula, what a place! The oasis town in the Saudi Arabian desert on the ancient Incense Route is now a hotspot for art and culture, as well as for luxury-loving tourists. The desert landscape, long inaccessible, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. The massive rock formations of Hegra, polished by sun and wind, contain over 100 monumental rock tombs, carved into sandstone by the Nabataeans in ancient times. The more than 500 inscriptions and paintings in the red rock walls of Jabal Ikmah, like an "open-air library," provide insights into the history of the once flourishing trading metropolis.
