Wunderkammer

Marcos Morau was the big winner in tanz magazine's critics' poll this year. The Spaniard was named "Choreographer of the Year" for, among other works, Totentanz (with his own company, La Veronal), Afanador (Ballet Nacional de España), and Notte Morricone (CCN Aterballetto). However, none of the critics mentioned a production from Berlin, even though Morau is an Artist in Residence at the Staatsballett. This is because he didn't produce a new piece here last season—but now! Wunderkammer is premiering at the Komische Oper (or rather, at its alternate venue, the Schillertheater)—a creation that, to the music of Clara Aguilar, creates a cabinet of curiosities popular in the Baroque and Renaissance periods. And by understanding the stage as a "chamber", Morau simultaneously questions the self-image of theater in the 21st century.
