Choreographies of change in a world on the move
Tanz im August in Berlin
Nothing stays the same. What applies to people, relationships, and landscapes also holds true for art — especially for contemporary dance, which thrives on transformation. Berlin’s Tanz im August festival explores these shifts in all their complexity: in society, gender, global politics, and aesthetic strategies. What stories do bodies tell in times of upheaval? How can movement reflect resistance, longing, or joy?
For over 35 years, Tanz im August has brought pioneering choreographers, radical newcomers, and outstanding companies to Berlin. This year, under the artistic direction of Ricardo Carmona, the festival once again becomes a stage for global voices and urgent questions. The program features world premieres, German premieres, and international co-productions that span continents and generations. From poetic solo works to immersive performance installations, from ritualistic group pieces to politically charged statements — the body becomes an archive, a battleground, a playground.
We introduce you to some of the highlights. The full program runs from 13 to 30 August.
