Screening
Boney M.
They appeared as a quartet, but a man in the background pulled the strings, determining their performance style, musical direction, and vocal sound: producer Frank Farian steered the pop group Boney M. with a patriarchal hand. This is revealed in the NDR documentary by Oliver Schwehm, who—with the benefit of decades of hindsight—takes a sharp look at the 1970s, examining racism, classism, and cultural boundaries. Boney M. – Disco. Macht. Legende is a study of a specific milieu and era—and a visual treat, not least because of Bobby Farrell’s stage presence: Farrell danced, while Farian sang—without ever appearing on stage. Perfect camouflage.
