From Avatar to Affect Space: Works by Brig Huezo
It all began with a need for personal expression in the form of a latent dataset: an avatar. A space for what finds no place—or is not permitted to find a place in terms of identity politics—in the analog realm. During the pandemic, choreographer Brig Huezo fed a virtual alter ego with TikTok dances and digital movement fragments: "In the beginning it was just me and my avatar. I was not used to work with humans that way, but then I wanted to share that." With The Ghost in the Glitch at the Cologne Opera, this approach now appears sleeker than ever. The work invites the audience to immerse themselves in the spectrum of the "phygital"—a realm where the self is renegotiated between physical presence and digital projection.
