It’s the same as it ever was—choreographers, they come, and they go. Virginie Brunelle, for her part, is a breakthrough kind of choreographer, energetically redefining the boundaries of contemporary dance. Since she burst onto the scene, she’s received the kind of attention many artists covet. The fact is she’s got choreographic chops, and her desire to connect with the public with often narrative, archetypal symbolic images has led to her being categorized, she acknowledges, as a black sheep, veering more towards popular appeal than cutting-edge reverence. Nonetheless touching people emotionally has shot her to the forefront of Québec dance and beyond.
