Choreographer Crystal Pite and theatre director Simon McBurney met Sanjoy Roy in the studio at Nederlands Dans Theater, as they were creating the final part of their Figures in Extinction trilogy.
From the beginning, Figures in Extinction was planned as a trilogy, yet it was also the first time you have worked together. How did that come about?
Crystal Pite: The initial idea arose many years ago in fact, when Anders Hellström was director of Nederlands Dans Theater, and suggested a collaboration with Simon. Coincidentally, Judith Dimant and Poppy Keeling, producers at Simon’s company Complicité at the time, had the same idea, and contacted me about it.
