Rock to Heaven

An empty stage, a grungy atmosphere, guitar riffs, percussion—not exactly the usual fare for a ballet evening at Munich’s Gärtnerplatz Theater. But Chief Choreographer Karl Alfred Schreiner consistently has stylistic surprises in store—both for the State Theater’s well-appointed, 20-member ensemble and for his inquisitive audience. This time: a three-part Rock to Heaven.

Schreiner himself kicks things off with a somewhat clichéd story of the glory and misery of a star (Joel Distefano) haunted by his demons. Neither his compassionate muse Courtney (Montana Dalton) nor his golden idol BoddAH (smoothly played by Ethan Ribeiro) can help him. Meanwhile, the group flexes and relaxes in XXL cargo gear.
