Honored with the Faust Theater Award in 2024, Zarina Stahnke soon after ended her dance career with the Semperoper Ballet in Dresden. She talks about her experiences as a freelancer since then

We meet at the café of C/O Berlin, the exhibition space for photography. Right from the start, Zarina Stahnke beams: “This is perfect—I love photography!” And immediately we’re right in the thick of it, exploring the many facets of the dancer. Since July 2025, she’s had the opportunity to showcase them. Judging by the energy Stahnke exudes during our meeting, she seems to be thriving in this process.

Stahnke was born and raised in Virginia, USA, and received her training at the School of American Ballet (SAB) in New York, an academy particularly shaped by George Balanchine (and his vision of the body).
