Screening
Nurejew
It was quite a struggle before this production even saw the light of day: Nurejew, choreographed by Yuri Possokhov, directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, and composed by Ilja Demutsky, was a huge success at Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre. The piece about the dance legend Rudolf Nureyev was repeatedly scheduled, canceled, and rescheduled, because in Putin's Russia, a gay protagonist who flees to the West still must be considered a kind of dissident. In 2023, the celebrated ballet finally disappeared from the program, but the Berlin State Ballet stepped in: It is now literally flexing all its muscles to help Nurejew triumph once again. Quite exceptionally, the premiere will be broadcast live on Arte on 21 March at 7:30 pm.
