Kirill Serebrennikov, how are the rehearsals for Nurejew at the Berlin State Ballet going?
With tremendous enthusiasm. There is a very strong sense of excitement within the company—they are exceptional artists and extraordinarily hard workers. And I mean not only the dancers, but the entire Staatsballett Berlin as a living organism.
You originally created Nurejew in 2017 for the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. What kind of theatre were you imagining at the time?
Yuri Possokhov and I had already collaborated several times—A Hero of Our Time was a major success. Vladimir Urin, who was then director of the Bolshoi, suggested that we create a biographical ballet about Rudolf Nureyev for the celebrations of his 80th birthday in 2018.
