Hanover isn't exactly a dream destination for a Germany tour. The city center is ordinary urban fabric, scarred by the destruction of World War II. The architecture deserves the label "run-of-the-mill", and the pedestrian zone is lined almost exclusively with the usual chain stores. But when it comes to art, the capital of Lower Saxony has established itself as a rather renowned player, and has done so for almost two centuries. In the same year and month that La Sylphide premiered in Paris, Hanover founded its art association—today it is one of the most respected institutions of its kind. And the ballet?
