Space, time, setting — it doesn't matter. When Renate Graziadei is part of the dance group, your eyes are glued to her. The elegance of her barefoot pliés, the casualness and high precision of her steps, torso twists and movement language that extends into the vertical have a magnetic effect. A Masque for the Multiverse, premiered in Berlin's Radialsystem (a follow-up in Bregenz is planned) benefits from all this.
The multi-disciplinary project, created in collaboration between Ensemble Continuum and laborgras (launched by Graziadei together with Arthur Stäldi in 1996) brings together eight musicians, three singers and four performers to breathe new life into a baroque tradition. The "Masque" of the 17th century, the courtly precursor of opera and ballet, is resurrected in the form of the music of William Lawes, court composer of the British King Charles I. Shara Nova vouches for the contemporary. Her filigree music plays with all kinds of contemporary phenomena from Beyoncé to the Olson Sisters. Wonderfully sung, danced and played, A Masque for the Multiverse is an evening that we hope will be seen by interested organizers and shown many times in the future.
