George Blanchine and Tilly Losch

Die Vergangenheit ruft: Neues Buch über George Balanchine

Just as Bach’s music brings out the best in choreographers, Balanchine’s life and work do so in biographers and critics. Robert Gottlieb – well known American book and magazine editor and, lately, dance reviewer – has written a compact account of the master choreographer’s life: George Balanchine – The Ballet  Maker. In the book’s 216 pages, there’s room too for critical comment.

Clad in underwear he exudes an aura of raw animal strength until he begins to move, at which point his body becomes an expressive instrument performing astonishing feats of balance and speed, including a moment of equipoise where his considerable...

Der Sack bleibt zu

Mehr Licht! Danach verlangte Nordrhein-Westfalens Ministerpräsident a. D. Wolfgang Clement.

Dancing in secret

It is a balmy October afternoon in south Florida, and I am driving toward the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation to meet members of Native Nations Dance Theatre. I can hardly believe this country road is a mere 80 miles west of the ugly billboard-burdened landscape of Ft. Lauderdale. The air is fresh. I’ve seen more than a dozen...
